Update: Tuesday-May 30, 2023 4:55 P.M. Current Covid-19 Booster Update and Appointments.

Update: Tuesday May 30,2023

We are doing Moderna Covid-19 Boosters each week.  Look on this website to make an appointment.  If NO appointments are showing as open that just means we are full for those days,  We don’t open up appointments too far in advance, usually 1-2 weeks at best.  Currently only appointments for those over age 65 or those that are immunocomprimised issues.

Update:  Friday April 21, 2023 2:30 P.M. Covid-19 Additional Booster Update

The CDC has followed the approval of the FDA and authorized an additional Covid-19 Booster.  Again, this is for those over age 65 and/or those immunosuppressed/immunocomprimised.

We have opened up appointments for these boosters on this web page on the starting menu.  Please make an appointment first and then fill out the consent form for these boosters.

We now have an ample supply and will open up appointments.   We limit the number of days ahead for appointments so that we can always get a full schedule for the day and maximize the number of vaccinations per vial and to minimize any waste.  Once we puncture a vial it is only good for 12 hours, so you can understand why we want to get as many doses per vail as possible.

We never open more appointments that we have vaccine on  hand.

The full CDC announcement is available here.

Covid-19 Additional Booster Information as of April 18, 2023

As of Tuesday, April 18, 2023 the FDA has authorized an additional Covid-19 booster.  As soon as additional CDC authorization is granted we will open appointments for this booster.  Not every person will be eligible for this booster, please read the below news release from CNET.

The US Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday authorized a second bivalent booster that targets new versions of the omicron variant for adults age 65 and older, as well as those who are immunocompromised.

For people who are age 65 and up, the FDA authorized another booster at least four months after your last shot. For those who have a weakened immune system, they can get one at least two months after their last dose.

The FDA’s announcement for some adults is an update to its overall plan for the country’s new COVID-19 vaccine campaign once the pandemic public health emergency expires. The FDA added Tuesday that it’ll decide in June which strain of COVID-19 to target in the next vaccine formula for the fall and winter season so the rest of the population may expect to get another booster this fall or winter.

The country is also officially moving away from the monovalent or “original” vaccine formulas, meaning people who haven’t had any vaccine yet can get a single shot of one of the bivalent or updated mRNA formulas.

Covid, Masking, Testing and Routine Vaccines 03/29/2023

All of us had hoped cases of Covid would continue to decrease, howerver we are still seeing active cases.  Tracking and tracing of active cases is not being done to the degreee it was early on in the pandemic.  Almost without exception when we see a single positive case in a few days we see a second, case especially within families.

What you have to remember is these positive cases had been circulating in the community.  So, if you stood close to one of these people at the Post Office, Grocery Store, or any other public places you stand a good chance of being infected, ESPECIALLY if you are unmasked.

The pharmacy and clinic and we hope other Health Care Providers will continue to require masks, for our protection and yours.

We have Covid tests that you can purchase OR for a limited time we can bill your insurance.  If you want us to bill your insurance, you must make a request on our web site.

This is a great time to catch up with your regular vaccinations, such as Tetanus, Pneumonia, and Shingles.  You can make a appointment for all our vaccines on our web site.

Covid, Flu, RSV and Routine Vaccines Information 02/17/2023

The spike we had been seeing with Covid infections seems to have lessened now.  We believe it still is a good idea to mask when in crowds and in public places.  Mask mandates are still in place for many of us, healthcare providers in particular.  Please be respectful of the masking requirements at the pharmacy.  Information concerning mask mandates can be found at the Washington State Department of Health.

Our website is updated with regards to all our vaccinations and other useful information.  We still are doing Covid vaccinations, as well as all other vaccines that we offer.  Please consult our web page for appointments and necessary forms you may need.

Covid,Flu and RSV Information 12/08/2022

Sadly, to say there continues to be high number of cases of Covid, Flu, Flu-like and RSV.  Masking and keeping your distance from others are highly suggested, ESPECIALLY in community areas.

For many cases of Covid and Flu we are able to test and treat at the pharmacy, there are a few exceptions, and we would work with your primary health care provider to facilitate treatment.  The treatment for RSV is only symptomatic and you should talk to your primary healthcare provider.

We are able to provide a free rapid Covid test and FLU test while you wait in your car.  We do ask that you fill out a consent form request that is on our web site, or follow this link.

We prefer to have an appointment made but we understand that Covid and the Flu can come on suddenly, so if there isn’t an appointment available call us and we will make every effort to get you tested quickly.

Lifewise Insurance Information 12/08/2022 9:15 a.m.

We were informed that Lifewise has changed their provider network to now include Lopez Island Pharmacy and Friday Harbor Drug.  You will be able to continue to have prescriptions filled and billed to Lifewise now and in 2023.

The number of phone calls to our elected officials and the Washington State Insurance Commissioner certainly got their attention.

Lifewise Insurance Information 11/29/2022 8:15 a.m.

If you have Lifewise Insurance in the past several days, you may have received a letter informing you that Lopez Island Pharmacy will not be in their pharmacy network in 2023.

The action by Lifewise caught us completely off guard, the letter is directing patients to have their prescriptions filled on a mainland pharmacy OR Lifewise’s Mail Order Pharmacy.

Prescriptions filled in a timely manner can be lifesaving and reduce other health care costs, such as hospitalizations.  Most of you realize how important it is to have a pharmacy that can help you quickly.  Just in the past several years during COVID we were one of the first to have vaccines locally and in those first months we vaccinated a large portion of Lopez.

It is not practical for residents living in the San Juans to remove their ability to use their insurance locally.

You can make your concerns heard by calling or emailing or both the below individuals, we will also be calling to remind you to contact your elected officials.

If you wish to be removed from our emailing/phone list, please send a return email stating REMOVE Lifewise in the subject line.

Thank you for your help in this important matter,

Lopez Island Pharmacy

Covid Fall 2022 Boosters and Flu Vaccinations- Sept 16,2022 9:00 A.M.

We are quickly working to open appointments today (09/16)  for

  • Covid Bivalent Boosters,
  • Covid Bivalent Boosters and Flu, Age 65 & up ,
  • Flu only, Age 65 & up

We will open appointments sometime the morning of September 16th.

Please bear with us as we work out any kinks in the scheduling.  Obviously allowing you to do 2 vaccinations with one appointment has its challenges.  We need to do the new Covid Boosters in multiples of 5, so on  any given day there could be 5, 10, 15, etc.  slots open.  If we don’t fill up a day with either 5, 10, etc., we may contact you to try and move you to another time.

Age 65 and up Flu are easier to work with and we will allow one whole day devoted to only Flu vaccinations.  Sadly we are still waiting arrival of Flu vaccines for those under the age of 65.  We apologize for the shipping delay.

After you get your appointment times please come back to this website and fill out your consent form, being careful to pick the right one for your type of appointment.  We have to do the paperwork for vaccinations by noon the day prior to your appointment so if we don ‘t have the completed consent forms ahead of time, you may lose your appointment.

Antiviral Covid Treatments (Paxlovid) by Pharmacy 07/15/2022

The pharmacy is able to prescribe the Covid-19 Antiviral treatment however there are certain requirements we MUST adhere to.  There is NO cost for the Paxlovid

For a Pharmacy to prescribe Paxlovid, we are required to have the following:

  1. Positive CoVid test, a photo of a home test is acceptable or we can do a free test in your car.
  2. Date of onset of symptoms
  3. A copy of health records, less than 12 months old
  4. A copy of laboratory blood work, less than 12 months old, that includes liver and kidney function tests
  5. A complete list of ALL medication, prescription, OTC and all supplements.
  6. If you are not a current patient of Lopez Island Pharmacy, we also need a New Patient Form filled out on our website, including insurance information.

Without this information, we are not allowed to write you a prescription for Paxlovid to treat CoVid. You would need to contact your doctor.

*****************************************

Antiviral Covid Treatments (Paxlovid) by Pharmacy 07/06/22

Yesterday(07/06/2022)  the FDA authorized Pharmacists to prescribe the COVID antiviral treatment, Paxlovid.  We are prepared to do so and have Paxlovid in stock.  However there are certain requirements that we must follow in order to prescribe Paxlovid.  The two main criteria for us to do this are.

  • Electronic or printed health records less than 12 months old, including the most recent reports of laboratory blood work for the state-licensed pharmacist to review for kidney or liver problems. State-licensed pharmacists could also receive this information through a consult with the patient’s health care provider.
  • A list of all medications they are taking, including over-the-counter medications so the state-licensed pharmacist can screen for drugs with potentially serious interactions with Paxlovid.

There are other criteria that may exclude you but we can determine that when we speak to you.

Moderna Boosters and Testing Information

Effective 06/13/2022 8:30 a.m.

We are not giving any Covid vaccinations for the remainder of June 2022.  Decreased demand and staffing shortages are the main reason.    We are still doing all of our regular vaccinations, i.e. shingles, pneumonia, tetanus, etc.   Appointments are available for these on our website.  If you need a Covid vaccination please contact the San Juan County Health Department. 360-378-4474 or visit their website.

We do have a limited supply of home testing kits, that if you have insurance are usually covered by insurance 100%, this includes Medicare patients.  We must do paperwork before we can give you these free tests so please go to our website to complete your request, or follow this link.  Free at home Covid Test.

We also have a good supply of rapid Covid tests that we perform at the pharmacy.    Go to our website under “Appts Tests and Vaccinations” to schedule a test, it takes 15 minutes.  These tests are free of charge.  If you schedule one of these tests at the pharmacy please wait in your car.

We also are fortunate to have a ample supply of the antiviral Paxlovid for treating patients with Covid.  A prescription is required to this medication and not everyone will qualify for using it.  Paxlovid is a 5 day course of treatment and you need to test after the 5 days to determine if you are positive for Covid. Remember when you have Covid and even if you are treating Covid, please stay away from others as much as possible.

Because we know there are many more cases of Covid on island and with tourists coming you have to assume that anyone close by you may be positive.  If those around in close proximity are unmasked that makes matters even worse.  Wearing a mask is the responsible thing to do when in public.

Finally there are lots of cases of Covid on Lopez Island, those doing home tests are usually not reported so any numbers you may see concerning the number of cases is not 100% accurate.  Sadly we went from the best in the state to the worst.

Update:  Friday April 21, 2023 2:30 P.M. Covid-19 Additional Booster Update

  • Flu only, Age 65 & up
